What if you had to eat the same exact meal for your whole life? This is essentially what most of us do to our pets — choose a food brand and stick with it. And while keeping your dog or cat on a consistent diet isn’t unhealthy, some veterinary nutritionists are raving about an alternative called rotation feeding. Click here to watch a video by Dr. Karen Becker about rotation feeding for pets. What is Rotation Feeding? Rotation feeding is really all about variety. It’s a holistic and nutritional philosophy that offers your pet a dietary alternative — varying both food proteins (chicken, beef, lamb, etc.) and food forms (raw, frozen, wet, dry, etc.). This way your dog or cat is able to enjoy and experience different flavors and textures. How is Rotation Feeding Beneficial? Proponents of rotation feeding boast about the many health and behavioral benefits, but here are four particular benefits that may interest you: 1. A more complete approach to nutrient intake. Many pet foods on the market are designed to be complete and balanced. However, food ingredients each have a unique nutritional profile. Components such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids can be found in different quantities, depending on the type of food. By combining specific complete diets, rotation feeding allows your pet to experience the benefits of two or more foods. Creates excitement during mealtime. Some dogs and cats become uninterested in their food once they are accustomed to certain textures, flavors and even brands. With rotation feedings, it’s like a new tasty adventure is waiting for your pet every time they go to their food bowl. Increase water consumption. Water is critical to all life. However, not all pets drink sufficient water. One way to remedy this is to add high moisture foods to your dog’s diet, such as raw frozen foods. This will often prevent health problems such as urinary issues, liver disease and constipation. Reduce risk of food allergies and intolerances. If consistently fed the same food, some dogs and cats may develop an allergy or intolerance to common ingredients such as chicken, beef, wheat, corn, or soy. Rotation feeding reduces the risk because the ingredients and formulations are not in your pet’s diet long enough for him or her to develop an adverse reaction, such as vomiting, diarrhea and hives. Offering healthy and holistic dog, cat and ferret food, Wysong has been developing natural pet food, designed in accordance with nature, for almost 40 years. Make your own tasty homemade dog food recipes. Learn how to make your own dog food and how much you should be feeding to your dog for optimal health and longevity. When Should I Start My Pet on Rotation Feeding? It’s much easier to start rotation feeding while he or she is still a puppy or kitten (assuming they are already eating solid food), but that’s not to say an older dog or cat can’t benefit from rotation feeding too. It just may take a little bit more patience. Often, it’s recommended that small amounts of the new food be blended into the regular diet, so that your pet may become accustomed to the taste and texture of the food slowly, especially if you are switching between brands with different formulations. This may be an issue for some pets. The most important part is that you consult a veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist before beginning rotation feeding. They can assist you in choosing which foods are best for the rotation and ensure that you continue to provide your dog a balanced diet. The following items represent some of The Dog Food Advisor’s most frequently asked questions about diet rotation for dogs. What is diet rotation? Also, keep a feeding diary. Nothing fancy, but keeping track of what you are feeding your dog will help immensely should he or she have difficulty processing a new pet food. Image: cynoclub / Shutterstock. Paprastoji krauja. Zoloft (Sertraline) - Side Effects, Dosage, Interactions. Q: Does Zoloft cause weight gain? And is it safe to take diet pills with Zoloft? A: The studies show that weight gain occurs in around 1 percent of people who take Zoloft. Given this small percentage, for individual situations it is difficult to say whether weight gain is actually caused by the medicine itself, another medical condition, a change in eating habits and/or physical activity, a combination of these factors, or something else. It is generally not safe to take over- the- counter diet aids, as they will interact with your medication. It is best to consult with your physician as to the safest way to lose weight based on your medical history, as he or she knows it best. Q: Will I gain weight taking Zoloft? A: Changes in weight and appetite are common side effects to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the class of drugs that includes Zoloft (sertraline). Patients should report any changes in their medical condition, including unusual weight gain, to their health care provider. You may also find helpful information at: http: //www. Q: Does Zoloft make you gain weight? A: Zoloft (sertraline) is a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It is commonly used to treat depression, social anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder and obsessive- compulsive disorder (OCD). The most common side effects with Zoloft include dry mouth, insomnia, sexual side effects, diarrhea, nausea, and sleepiness. Weight increase and appetite increase are also among the possible side effects. Q: Does Zoloft cause weight gain if food consumption and exercise don't change? A: Changes in weight and appetite are common side effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the class of drugs that includes Zoloft (sertraline). Patients should contact their health care provider for any changes in their medical condition, including unusual weight gain. If you are concerned about breast cancer risk you may want to contact your health care provider. For additional information regarding Zoloft you may want to visit our website. The FDA allows for very small variabilities in the performance of generic drugs. However, approval by the FDA indicates that the generic product is the same with respect to identity, strength, quality, purity, and potency, as the brand name drug. The inactive ingredients are what can differ from product to product. This may contribute to differences in tolerability or side effects. Sarah Lewis, Pharm. DQ: I would like to stop taking Zoloft, which I've been taking for five years. How do I wean myself off of it gradually? My doctor agrees with the idea but said I must not stop abruptly. A: Side effects may occur when patients stop taking Zoloft (sertraline) or other drugs like it. These side effects include restlessness, irritability, agitation, dizziness, anxiety, confusion, headache, tiredness, and insomnia. You should reduce your dose gradually, by small amounts. If intolerable side effects develop following a decrease in the dose or upon stopping treatment, then talk to your doctor and consider resuming the previously prescribed dose. After the side effects have subsided, the dose can be decreased at a more gradual rate. For more information on Zoloft, go to http: //www. Michelle Mc. Dermott, Pharm. DQ: I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and have been put on Zoloft. May I please ask exactly what it does? A: Zoloft (sertraline) is an SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Zoloft has been around since 1. Prozac (fluoxetine) in that class of medication. It effectively raises certain neurotransmitters at the postsynaptic cleft, so that your brain seems to have more serotonin (a feel- good chemical), dopamine (another feel- good chemical), and to a certain extent, norepinephrine (important for motivation and focus). This medication tries to stabilize your serotonin at a normal level so that you no longer bounce between mania and depression. At times, Zoloft will work by itself for this diagnosis; at other times, adjunct medication may need to be added. Feel free to visit us here: http: //www. Matt Curley, Pharm. DQ: I take a generic version of Zoloft. Do you think that 2. A: Although people frequently gain weight while on antidepressants such as Zoloft (sertraline), it's not clear why. There are a couple of reasons why it's difficult to say that antidepressants cause weight gain. First, the studies of these medications usually last less than 1. Second, since loss of appetite and weight loss are common symptoms of depression, it's possible that many cases of antidepressant- related weight gain are caused by the depression getting better, not by the medication itself. In general, it is thought that SSRIs, like Zoloft, Paxil, or Prozac, are more likely candidates to cause weight gain than the SNRIs, such as Effexor or Wellbutrin. The SNRIs tend to be a little more stimulating and cause appetite suppression, which may lead to people losing weight while on these medications. If the weight gain is substantial, you may want to have a discussion with your physician to see what other options are available to you. Lori Poulin, Pharm. DQ: Should someone take Xanax and Zoloft? If not, why? A: These medications are used together to help treat medical conditions. As long as your health care provider has prescribed you these medications, then he or she thinks this is the best course of treatment for you. Do not take these medications other than the way you have been instructed to, and if you develop any strange feelings, let your provider know. Gerald Levy, RPh. Q: Is it okay to just stop taking Zoloft? A: According to the drug maker, abrupt discontinuation of Zoloft (sertaline) can result in severe withdrawal effects. The symptoms can include irritability, agitation, dizziness, anxiety, confusion, headache, tiredness, and insomnia. Monitoring for symptoms should be done by a medical provider for anyone stopping medication. A gradual lowering of the dose is recommended to avoid these effects. Symptoms do decrease over time, but if intolerable restarting or increasing the dose should alleviate them. Q: If you don't see a difference with Zoloft, should I stop taking it? I've been on it for 3 years. A: The fact that you don't necessarily see a difference may be an indication that you may be underdosed, however, rest assured that there is an effect. There have been several misadventures by people who have stopped taking this medication cold turkey, and I do not recommend it. In 1. 99. 3, we had a patient who stopped taking their Zoloft suddenly and they were involved in a very serious car accident, the patient reported having feelings of disassociation and was eventually put back on the medication. Please consult your prescriber regarding either increasing your dose or slowly tapering off of it. Feel free to visit our site for more information regarding Zoloft and other SSRIs: http: //www. M. Curley, Pharm D. MSCISQ: I currently take Zocor, Cozaar, Synthroid, Prempro, and a baby aspirin each day. My doctor wants me to add Zoloft. I'm concerned about this. Is it safe to take with the other medications? A: I have reviewed your question regarding Zocor (simvastatin), Cozaar (losartan), Synthroid (levothroid), Prempro (conguated estrogens), aspirin, and Zoloft (sertraline). The available literature indicates that is a slight increase in bleeding due to the interaction between the aspirin and Zoloft (sertraline). You may want to review this with your physician. For any immediate concerns, consult your physician Thank you for contacting Everyday Health. Q: My son is 1. 6 and on Zoloft. Today he had an anxiety attack. He has been on the medication for about 1. He also has a lot of issues with acne and has been on almost all antibiotics recommended for it. I heard that there is an effective medication, but that there are many side effects for it including depression. A: Zoloft (sertraline) is used to treat both depression and anxiety attacks. As with all antidepressant medications, it can take several weeks to show effectiveness. Side effects are patient- specific and often dose- related. The most common antibiotic used to treat acne is tetracycline. All antibiotics also have side effects which are patient- specific. Please talk to your son's doctors about your concerns. Q: I am currently on Zoloft, and, would appreciate any valid information you can give me on it. A: Zoloft (sertraline) is very effective drug often used to treat depression. It is a member of a class of drugs called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). The following website discusses many aspects of the drug: http: //www. You may also find the following link helpful. Does it cause additional difficult episodes if ones stays on it a long period of time? A: Zoloft (sertraline) is an antidepressant medication in the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). When antidepressants are used to treat depression it is generally recommended to be on the medication for one year and then taper off. If a patient continues to have episodes of depression, or the first episode was very severe a patient may be on it indefinitely.
Fly - Wikipedia. True flies are insects of the order. Diptera, the name being derived from the Greek di = two, and ptera = wings. Insects of this order use only a single pair of wings to fly, the hindwings being reduced to club- like balancing organs known as halteres. Diptera is a large order containing an estimated 1,0. Their wing arrangement gives them great manoeuvrability in flight, and claws and pads on their feet enable them to cling to smooth surfaces. Flies undergo complete metamorphosis; the eggs are laid on the larval food- source and the larvae, which lack true limbs, develop in a protected environment, often inside their source of their food. The pupa is a tough capsule from which the adult emerges when ready to do so; flies mostly have short lives as adults. The monophyly of holometabolous insects has long been accepted, with the main orders being established as Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera, and it is the relationships between these groups which has caused difficulties. Diptera is widely thought to be a member of Mecopterida, along with Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), Trichoptera (caddisflies), Siphonaptera (fleas), Mecoptera (scorpionflies) and possibly Strepsiptera (twisted- wing flies). Diptera has been grouped with Siphonaptera and Mecoptera in the Antliophora, but this has not been confirmed by molecular studies. The Nematocera are recognized by their elongated bodies and many- segmented, often feathery antennae as represented by mosquitoes and crane flies. The Brachycera have rounder bodies and much shorter antennae. The construction of a phylogenetic tree has been the subject of ongoing research. The following cladogram is based on the FLYTREE project. They include many familiar insects such as house flies, blow flies, mosquitoes, gnats, black flies, midges and fruit flies. More than 1. 50,0. Many nematoceran larvae are aquatic. Animals parasitised include molluscs, woodlice, millipedes, insects, mammals. In wet and colder environments flies are significantly more important as pollinators. Compared to bees, they need less food as they do not need to provision their young. Many flowers that bear low nectar and those that have evolved trap pollination depend on flies. These include the cave dwelling Mycetophilidae (fungus gnats) whose larvae are the only diptera with bioluminescence. The Sciaridae are also fungus feeders. Some plants are pollinated by fungus feeding flies that visit fungus infected male flowers. The first tagma of the fly, the head, bears the eyes, the antennae, and the mouthparts (the labrum, labium, mandible, and maxilla make up the mouthparts). The second tagma, the thorax, bears the wings and contains the flight muscles on the second segment, which is greatly enlarged; the first and third segments have been reduced to collar- like structures, and the third segment bears the halteres, which help to balance the insect during flight. The third tagma is the abdomen consisting of 1. The compound eyes may be close together or widely separated, and in some instances are divided into a dorsal region and a ventral region, perhaps to assist in swarming behaviour. The antennae are well- developed but variable, being thread- like, feathery or comb- like in the different families. The mouthparts are adapted for piercing and sucking, as in the black flies, mosquitoes and robber flies, and for lapping and sucking as in many other groups. The gut includes large diverticulae, allowing the insect to store small quantities of liquid after a meal. The third segments of the antennae and the maxillary palps bear the main olfactory receptors, while the gustatory receptors are in the labium, pharynx, feet, wing margins and female genitalia. The taste receptors in females at the tip of the abdomen receive information on the suitability of a site for ovipositing. A further adaptation for flight is the reduction in number of the neural ganglia, and concentration of nerve tissue in the thorax, a feature that is most extreme in the highly derived Muscomorpha infraorder. The only other order of insects bearing a single pair of true, functional wings, in addition to any form of halteres, are the Strepsiptera. In contrast to the flies, the Strepsiptera bear their halteres on the mesothorax and their flight wings on the metathorax. It consists of eleven segments in primitive groups and ten segments in more derived groups, the tenth and eleventh segments having fused. Each segment is made up of a dorsal and a ventral sclerite, connected by an elastic membrane. In some females, the sclerites are rolled into a flexible, telescopic ovipositor. These act as gyroscopic organs and are rapidly oscillated in time with the wings; they act as a balance and guidance system by providing rapid feedback to the wing- steering muscles, and flies deprived of their halteres are unable to fly. The wings and halteres move in synchrony but the amplitude of each wing beat is independent, allowing the fly to turn sideways. The directional changes are called saccades and typically involve an angle of 9. They are initiated by visual stimuli as the fly observes an object, nerves then activate steering muscles in the thorax that cause a small change in wing stroke which generate sufficient torque to turn. Detecting this within four or five wingbeats, the halteres trigger a counter- turn and the fly heads off in a new direction. Dolichopodid flies in the genus Condylostylus respond in less than 5 milliseconds to camera flashes by taking flight. Langmuir suggested an estimated speed of 2. Many flies mate in flight while swarming. In many flies, the larval stage is long and adults may have a short life. Most dipteran larvae develop in protected environments; many are aquatic and others are found in moist places such as carrion, fruit, vegetable matter, fungi and, in the case of parasitic species, inside their hosts. They tend to have thin cuticles and become desiccated if exposed to the air. Apart from the Brachycera, most dipteran larvae have sclerotinised head capsules, which may be reduced to remnant mouth hooks; the Brachycera, however, have soft, gelatinized head capsules from which the sclerites are reduced or missing. Many of these larvae retract their heads into their thorax. Especially in the Brachycera, little demarcation is seen between the thorax and abdomen, though the demarcation may be visible in many Nematocera, such as mosquitoes; in the Brachycera, the head of the larva is not clearly distinguishable from the rest of the body, and few, if any, sclerites are present. Informally, such brachyceran larvae are called maggots. The eyes and antennae of brachyceran larvae are reduced or absent, and the abdomen also lacks appendages such as cerci. This lack of features is an adaptation to food such as carrion, decaying detritus, or host tissues surrounding endoparasites. These are found especially in groups that have larvae dependent on food sources that are short- lived or are accessible for brief periods. In Hylemya strigosa (Anthomyiidae) the larva moults to the second instar before hatching, and in Termitoxenia (Phoridae) females have incubation pouches, and a full developed third instar larva is deposited by the adult and it almost immediately pupates with no freely feeding larval stage. The tsetse fly (as well as other Glossinidae, Hippoboscidae, Nycteribidae and Streblidae) exhibits adenotrophic viviparity; a single fertilised egg is retained in the oviduct and the developing larva feeds on glandular secretions. When fully grown, the female finds a spot with soft soil and the larva works its way out of the oviduct, buries itself and pupates. Some flies like Lundstroemia parthenogenetica (Chironomidae) reproduce by thelytokous parthenogenesis while some gall midges have larvae that can produce eggs (paedogenesis). In some groups, particularly the Nematocera, the pupa is intermediate between the larval and adult form; these pupae are described as . The outer surface of the pupa may be leathery and bear spines, respiratory features or locomotory paddles. In other groups, described as . In these, the outer surface is a puparium, formed from the last larval skin, and the actual pupa is concealed within. Birds found in Lakes, Rivers, Ponds Habitats. Periodical cicadas - Wikipedia. Magicicada is the genus of the 1. North America. Although they are sometimes called . After such a prolonged developmental phase, the adults are active for about 4 to 6 weeks. Within two months of the original emergence, the lifecycle is complete, the eggs have been laid, and the adult cicadas are gone for another 1. Description. The wings are translucent and have orange veins. The underside of the abdomen may be black, orange, or striped with orange and black, depending on the species. Mature females are slightly larger than males. Different species have different characteristic calling songs. The call of decim periodical cicadas is said to resemble someone calling . Like other Auchenorrhyncha bugs, they have mouthparts used in piercing plants and sucking their sap. A cicada's proboscis can pierce human skin when it is handled, which is painful, but in no other way harmful. These cicadas are not venomous, and no evidence shows they transmit diseases. They pose little threat to mature vegetation, although planting new trees or shrubs is best postponed until after an expected emergence of the periodical cicadas.
Mature plants rarely suffer lasting damage, although twig die- off or flagging can result from egg- laying. The seven periodical cicada species are so named because, in any one location, all of the members of the population are developmentally synchronized—they emerge as adults all at once in the same year. This periodicity is especially remarkable because their lifecycles are so long—1. Cicadas of all other species (perhaps 3. Many people refer to these nonperiodical species as annual cicadas since some are seen every summer. The few known lifecycles of annual species range from two to 1. The nymphs of the periodical cicadas live underground, usually within 2 ft (6. It has been suggested that the difference in the 1. While underground, the nymphs move deeper below ground, feeding on larger roots. In most years in the United States, this works out to late April or early May in the far south, and late May to early June in the far north. Emerging nymphs climb to a suitable place on the nearby vegetation to complete their transformation into adults. They molt one last time and then spend about six days in the trees waiting for their exoskeletons to harden completely. Just after this final molt, the teneral adults are white, but darken within an hour. Magicicada in final molting stage prior to hardening of exoskeleton. Adult periodical cicadas live only for a few weeks; by mid- July, all have disappeared. Their short adult lives have one purpose: reproduction. Singing males of a single Magicicada species form aggregations (choruses) that are sexually attractive to females. Males in these choruses alternate bouts of singing with short flights from tree to tree in search of receptive females. In addition to their . After mating, the female cuts V- shaped slits in the bark of young twigs and lays about 2. After about six to 1. Periodical cicada; Pinned Magicicada tredecassini male from Brood XIX, 2011. Insects are a large, diverse group of organisms. To date, over a million different kinds of insects have been described, more than all other kinds of organisms. Hear the distinctive call that large swarms can raise to a loud roar. Predator satiation survival strategy. The emergence period of large prime numbers (1. For example, tree growth has been observed to decline the year before the emergence of a brood, because of the increased feeding on roots by nymphs. Uneaten carcasses of periodic cicadas decompose on the ground, providing a resource pulse of nutrients to the forest community. Eastern gray squirrel populations have been negatively affected, because the egg- laying activity of female cicadas damaged upcoming mast crops. For example, in 2. XXII emerged in Louisiana and the 1. III emerged in western Illinois and eastern Iowa. In 1. 89. 8, entomologist. C. Marlatt assigned Roman numerals to 3. I through XVII (with emerging years 1. XVIII through XXX (1. Furthermore, two of the brood numbers assigned by Marlatt (broods XI and XXI) existed at one time, but have become extinct. The Marlatt numbering scheme has been retained for convenience (and because it clearly separates 1. Three of them follow a 1. Four more species follow a 1. These seven species are also sometimes grouped differently into three subgroups, the so- called Decim species group, Cassini species group, and Decula species group, reflecting strong similarities of each 1. However, the original spelling has been maintained throughout by taxonomic catalogues. For example, Broods IV (1. XIX (1. 3- year cycle) overlap in western Missouri and eastern Oklahoma. An effort is currently underway to generate new distribution maps of all periodical cicada broods. This effort makes use of crowdsourced records and records collected by entomologists. Four- year early and late emergences are common and involve a much larger proportion of the population than one- year changes. Recent research suggests, in extant periodical cicadas, the 1. At around 2. 5 Mya, the Cassini and Decula groups split from each other. The Sota et al. The second noteworthy event took place about 3. Cassini group from its conspecifics to the east. The Decim and the Decula clades experienced similar western splits, but these are estimated to have taken place 2. The 1. 3- and 1. 7- year splits in Cassini and Decula took place after these events. The 1. 7- year cicadas largely occupy formerly glaciated territory, and as a result their phylogeographic relationships, reflect the effects of repeated contraction into glacial refugia (small islands of suitable habitat) and subsequent re- expansion during multiple interglacial periods. In each species group, Decim, Cassini, and Decula, the signature of the glacial periods is manifested today in three phylogeographic genetic subdivisions: one subgroup east of the Appalachians, one midwestern, and one on the far western edge of their range. The Sota et al. These were later joined by Cassini originating from the western Cassini clade and Decula originating from eastern, middle, and western Decula clades. As Cassini and Decula invaded the south, they became synchronized with the resident M. Today, these Cassini and Decula are known as M. More data are needed to lend support to this hypothesis and others hypotheses related to more recent 1. M. Meanwhile, except for an occasional one which may appear in the summer, they remain underground. There is considerable evidence that these insects appear every seventeenth year in Pennsylvania. He noted that the people who had prepared these documents had made no such reports in other years. In the interval between the years when they are so numerous, they are only seen or heard single in the woods. Bartram noted that upon hatching from eggs deposited in the twigs of trees, the young insects ran down to the earth and . He reported that he had been able to discover them 1. He noted that the females lay their eggs in the small twigs of trees while above ground. He predicted that the insects . They have historically been eaten by Native Americans, who roasted them in hot ovens, stirring them until they were well browned. There is also the much stronger objection in the instinctive repugnance which all insects seem to inspire as an article of food to most civilized nations. Theoretically, the Cicada, collected at the proper time and suitably dressed and served, should be a rather attractive food. The larvae have lived solely on vegetable matter of the cleanest and most whole- some sort, and supposedly, therefore, would be much more palatable and suitable for food than the oyster, with its scavenger habit of living in the muddy ooze of river bottoms, or many other animals which are highly prized and which have not half so clean a record as the periodical Cicada.
